On average in the U.S., every five to six minutes a person is shot in the context of a murder, assault, suicide or suicide attempt, accident, or by police intervention. Every Five Minutes is an exhibition featuring the work of seven artists who use the power and potential of the photographic image to create works in response to gun violence in America. Curated specifically for the EYE SOUTH symposium at Columbus State University, the show features video and still images that examine issues such as systemic racism, media representation, domestic abuse and police brutality. These works represent a broad range of approaches including reenactments, studio still lifes, psychedelic montage and the use of symbolism to produce imagery that is both personally meaningful and powerfully provocative of the unsettling climate in which they were born.
